Summer School 2013

Summer School Calendar

Summer School at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy is scheduled from June 10- June 21.

Registration Period

Registration for the Class of 2017 will take place from Friday, April 19 – Friday, May 3. Students may register by downloading the registration form from http://www.olla.org/downloads/summer2013.pdf. Availability is assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.

2 Non – Credit Courses $695.00

The following non-credit courses will be offered during Summer School 2013:

ENGLISH

High School Reading/Writing Workshop for Incoming Freshmen

Choose Session 1: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. or Session 2: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The High School Reading/Writing Workshop meets the needs of many beginning high school students for a course that focuses on improving strategies for reading and writing effectively. The course is intended to help students make the transition from middle school to high school, and it should set a foundation for reading and writing in high school English, as well as in other subjects.

This course will help students develop strategies to begin independent reading of a variety of print materials, for a range of purposes, in present and future reading situations. This course is not a remedial reading course but an opportunity to develop and strengthen reading skills and strategies. In addition, the course provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their writing skills.

Some students are required to take this course as a condition for acceptance; these students were notified in their acceptance letter. Other students may opt to take this course; students who have struggled in the past with reading and/or writing are encouraged to enroll.

Materials needed: Half inch three ring binder with pockets, loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, highlighters and Post-its, a dictionary and the novel Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier.

MATH

Algebra I Summer Prep Course/Mandatory Math Summer Prep Course

Choose Session 1: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. or Session 2: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This class is designed to strengthen those basic math skills needed to successfully transition from middle school mathematics to high school Algebra. This course will review basic topics such as fractions, decimals, signed numbers, simple equations, properties and vocabulary, as well as instruct them on how to use the TI-Nspire graphing calculator. In addition, this course will assist students in completing the College Preparatory Algebra I summer assignment and prepare them for successful completion of the summer assignment assessment.

Some students are required to take this course as a condition for acceptance; these students were notified in their acceptance letter. Other students may opt to take this course.

Materials needed: TI-Nspire Handheld Graphing Calculator (available for purchase through OLLA), notebook and pencils.

Honors Algebra I Summer Prep Course

Choose Session 1: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. or Session 2: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This course is strongly recommended for students placed in Honors Algebra I. It is designed to review concepts necessary to successfully transition from middle school mathematics to our high school Algebra I Honors program. This course will review signed numbers, solving linear equations, properties of real numbers and vocabulary as well as instruct them on how to use the TI-Nspire graphing calculator. In addition, this course will assist students in completing the Algebra I Honors summer assignment and prepare them for successful completion of the summer assignment assessment.

Those students not enrolled in this summer course are expected to complete the summer assignment independently and will be tested on the summer assignment material within the first week of school.

Materials needed: TI-Nspire Handheld Graphing Calculator (available for purchase through OLLA), notebook and pencils.

Algebra II Summer Prep Course

Choose Session 1: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. or Session 2: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This course is strongly recommended for students placed in Algebra II. It is designed to review Algebra I concepts necessary to successfully transition to high school Algebra II. This course will review signed numbers, properties of real numbers, solving linear equations, word problems and vocabulary, as well as instruct them on how to use the TI-Nspire graphing calculator. In addition, this course will assist students in completing the Algebra II summer assignment and prepare them for successful completion of the summer assignment assessment.

Those students not enrolled in this summer course are expected to complete the summer assignment independently and will be tested on the summer assignment material within the first week of school.

Materials needed: TI-Nspire Handheld Graphing Calculator (available for purchase through OLLA), notebook and pencils.

Honors Algebra II Summer Prep Course

Choose Session 1: 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. or Session 2: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This course is mandatory for students placed in Honors Algebra II. It is designed to review Algebra I concepts necessary to successfully transition to high school Honors Algebra II. This course will review solving linear equations, factoring polynomials, rules of exponents, word problems and vocabulary, as well as instruct them on how to use the TI-Nspire graphing calculator. In addition, this course will assist students in completing the Honors Algebra II summer assignment and prepare them for successful completion of the summer assignment assessment.

Materials needed: TI-Nspire Handheld Graphing Calculator (available for purchase through OLLA), notebook and pencils.
